decarbonization of the action of the Mizonokuchi

In February 2020, Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, announced its goal of virtually zero CO2 emissions by 2050, and in November of the same year, it formulated the Kawasaki Carbon Zero Challenge 2050, a decarbonization strategy, and established “Decarbonization Action Mizonokuchi In November of the same year, we also established the “Kawasaki Carbon Zero Challenge 2050,” a decarbonization strategy.

The term “decarbonization” refers to reducing emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), a cause of global warming, to the lowest possible level, and absorbing and reducing the CO2 emitted, thereby effectively reducing CO2 emissions to zero. By intensively implementing familiar and advanced initiatives that contribute to decarbonization in the Mizoguchi, Takatsu-ku and surrounding areas, and by allowing people to experience the effects and convenience of the initiatives, the project aims to promote behavioral change toward an environmentally conscious lifestyle among individual citizens, thereby realizing a decarbonized society.

Examples of “decarbonization actions” in Mizonokuchi include
Renewable energy: Joint purchase of electricity for households, introduction of renewable energy to public and commercial facilities
Resource recycling: My Bottle, reusable tableware and bottles, recycling systems
Sharing economy: shared bicycles, car sharing, umbrella sharing
Electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles: Hydrogen stations, introduction into official and company vehicles
Food loss reduction: development and dissemination of eco-friendly recipes, food sharing

The first round of selection for the “Decarbonization Leading Regions,” which aim to achieve virtually zero CO2 emissions from electricity consumption in the civilian sector by FY2030, was held, and 26 proposals were selected by the government nationwide, including Kawasaki City. In the selection process, the government recognized the efforts of “Decarbonization Action Mizonokuchi,” a representative example, which has been working together with citizens and businesses to realize a decarbonized society. We will continue to work with stakeholders to make this a model for other core cities in Japan, while making use of government grants. We will promote initiatives for a “decarbonization leading region” in the Mizoguchi area and other areas!
