Green Carbon selected by Tokyo Metropolitan Government for absorption/removal carbon credit creation

Green Carbon has been selected by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government for the ‘Absorption and Removal Carbon Credit Creation Promotion Project’, a demonstration project to support start-ups working on the creation of absorption and removal carbon credits.

Green Carbon is an environmental start-up that is involved in the creation of nature-based carbon credits, mainly in South-East Asia, and in Japan works with production farmers across the country to conserve and decarbonise the global environment. Among other things, it is working on J-credits for paddy methane reduction and abatement, and in Japan has launched the Rice Crop Consortium to create paddy-derived J-credits, the first and largest paddy J-credits certification in Japan As of August 2024, the rice crop Consortium has a registered area of more than 40,000 ha and more than 900 companies and agricultural corporations are participating, creating a unique network of farmers across the country.

The Rice Cultivation Consortium is a consortium for collective implementation of J-credit applications through ‘extension of the medium-drying period through paddy rice cultivation’, with the participation of individual farmers, agricultural corporations, companies, financial institutions, local authorities and the media (as of May 2024). The rice farming consortium has a total of more than 40,000 ha of paddy farmers and more than 600 companies and agricultural corporations participating in the project.

Green Carbon was selected for the project in recognition of its advanced initiatives, including its track record in generating and selling carbon credits domestically and internationally, and its use of a nationwide network of farmers. In this project, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and demonstration sites in the Kanto region will be used to implement a project to create removal system (biochar and carbon farming) credits. The generated credits will be sold to companies in Tokyo and the proceeds returned to farmers in Tokyo, with the aim of creating a model for credit generation and utilisation in Tokyo.

Green Carbon has a vision of ‘saving the planet with the power of life’ and is developing a business that provides comprehensive support for the creation, registration and sale of carbon credits. In addition, we are also developing agriculture-related, research and development and ESG consulting businesses. Among these, in the PJ for creating carbon credits by reducing methane gas in paddy fields, which is the main project being promoted, we have obtained Japan’s first and largest (approximately 6,220t) J-credit certification for paddy fields, and plan to expand this to approximately 50,000ha in FY2024. It also offers Agreen, a one-platform service that completes the entire process of credit registration, application and sales, simplifying the procedures and paperwork involved in credit application and registration and reducing the man-hours required by credit creators.
