Green Carbon selected for J-Credit creation promotion support
Green Carbon has been selected by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) to participate in the 2024 J-credit creation promotion and support project in the agricultural sector.
This project is based on the Green Food System Strategy and aims to increase the use of J-credits in the agricultural sector.
In the agricultural sector, only 25 projects have been registered, including the introduction of heat pumps in agricultural greenhouses, the extension of the mid-drying period in rice cultivation and the application of biochar to farmland, due to the high cost of credit generation and the limited number of methodologies that can be used. Therefore, based on the ‘Green Food System Strategy’, which aims to realise both improvement of productivity and sustainability of the food, agriculture, forestry and fisheries industries through innovation, the J-Credits Programme is working to expand the use of J-Credits in the agricultural sector, including project registration and certification of credits, and initiatives for the development of new methodologies. The project will support the creation of credits in a comprehensive and integrated manner.
Green Carbon is an environmental start-up that is involved in the creation of nature-based carbon credits, mainly in South-East Asia, and in Japan is working with farmers across the country to conserve and decarbonise the global environment. It is working on J-credits for paddy methane reduction and abatement, and has established the Rice Crop Consortium for the creation of paddy-derived J-credits in Japan, the first and largest J-credits certification for paddy fields in Japan As of August 2024, the area registered with the Rice Crop Consortium is more than 40,000 ha and more than 900 companies and agricultural corporations are participating, creating a unique network of farmers throughout the country.
Green Carbon feels that the number of J-credit projects and established methodologies is small and the number of farmers who can participate is limited. Green Carbon is aware that the number of J-credit projects and the number of farmers who can participate is limited. The carbon farming project we are working on this time is a methodology for storing carbon on farmland, so it can be applied to a wide range of farmland, including rice paddies, fields and pastures, and we believe that more farmers will be able to participate in it. Through this demonstration, we aim to contribute to the future reduction of emissions in the new Japanese agricultural sector.
