Kawasaki City Project for Promoting Decarbonized Lifestyle Behavior Change

CO2 is emitted at each stage of production, including procurement of raw materials, manufacturing, transportation, use, and disposal of products. While each business is promoting behavioral changes toward decarbonization, such as the introduction of renewable energy and provision of environmentally friendly products, it is also essential for citizens (consumers) to change their behavior (proper use and disposal) toward the realization of a decarbonized society. Therefore, the city will exchange information with six businesses that are in contact with the daily lives of citizens through their products, etc., and by “visualizing” and publicizing their contribution to CO2 reduction from manufacturing to disposal, promote behavioral change among citizens, which in turn will lead to further behavioral change among businesses, aiming to spread and expand the “decarbonized lifestyle through collaboration between citizens and businesses. This will lead to further changes in the behavior of business operators.

Outline of the Project
In collaboration with business operators, video content will be created to “visualize” the amount of contribution to CO2 reduction made by Kawasaki citizens and business operators through behavioral change. Information (digital signage, SNS, websites, etc.) will be disseminated to show that changes in behavior will lead to a large contribution to CO2 reduction in terms of overall lifestyles. Promoting further behavioral change by disseminating information on the status of efforts by citizens and businesses, etc.

What is “Decarbonization Action Mizonokuchi”?
In February 2020, Kawasaki City announced its goal of virtually zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2050, and in November of the same year, the city established the “Decarbonization Action Mizonokuchi” model decarbonization zone in the Mizonokuchi area of Takatsu Ward. By intensively implementing familiar and advanced initiatives that contribute to decarbonization in the area and allowing people to experience the benefits and convenience of these initiatives, Kawasaki aims to promote behavioral change toward environmentally conscious lifestyles among individual citizens and realize a decarbonized society.

Main Initiatives

Use of 100% renewable energy at Takatsu Ward Office, Marui Family Mizoguchi, Nocty Plaza, and various other private and public facilities. Installation of water supply spots at Takatsu Ward Office and other locations where people can refill their own water bottles. Reduced consumption of plastic bottles. Spreading the use of sharing services that allow people to share tools and reduce waste. Effective use of heat generated during waste incineration (power generation, heated swimming pool) at the Tachibana Treatment Center, a waste treatment facility completed in April 2024. Hydrogen produced from solar panel electricity is replenished in a tank, and electricity is generated from the hydrogen at night and during disasters. Development of an environmental application that allows users to accumulate points for eco-friendly behavior and redeem them for eco-friendly products and services. A “hydrogen station” was opened and operated in Kajigaya, Takatsu-ku, Tokyo, to fill hydrogen-fueled vehicles (fuel cell vehicles).
In addition, fuel cell vehicles were introduced as official vehicles for the Takatsu Ward Office. All Tokyu lines, including the Denentoshi line, operate trains using 100% renewable energy, and a hydrogen-powered train is in test operation on the JR Nambu line.
