Mitsubishi Motors joins the Honda-Nissan alliance

On 1 August 2024, Honda and Nissan announced progress on their alliance study.

The main focus is on joint research on basic elemental technologies such as in-vehicle operating systems related to software-defined vehicles (SDVs), mutual use of suppliers including common use of batteries in the field of electric vehicles, common use of eAxle such as motors and inverters, and mutual supply of vehicles including electric vehicles.

The three companies have different areas of expertise in electrification technology, and the addition of a new partner is expected to increase the number of technologies available to the three companies and enable them to develop products and services that better meet market needs. The increase in the number of alliance partners is also expected to facilitate the development and deployment of products more in tune with market needs.

In addition, cost reductions can be expected by spreading development costs, and the fusion of each company’s knowledge can be expected to speed up development and create new value. However, there are many issues to be addressed, such as adjusting the content of the alliance to match the different business strategies of the three companies, reviewing the technology development strategy including Hitachi Astemo, which is a common partner of Honda and Nissan, and the alliance strategy with Renault including Ampere, in which Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors are participating. Industry restructuring will proceed without waiting for medium- to long-term growth.
