Recycling Trends of Automotive Plastic and Batteries / Circular Economy of Batteries

EMC measures for EVs and automated vehicles

Currently, EVs use high-power motors and inverters of several tens of kW or more, and high-speed digital communications such as millimeter-wave radar of several tens of GHz or more and 5G communications have been introduced in automatic driving vehicles. At the same time, ensuring electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) performance has become essential in vehicle design and development, and the introduction of high-power power electronics and high-speed information and communication devices has led to increasingly stringent requirements for EMC.
The latest automotive EMC measures will be discussed in detail. First of all, accurate measurements are necessary, and it is important to select appropriate measuring instruments for this purpose. The features and differences of each measuring instrument and how to use them will be explained in an easy-to-understand manner. In addition, a proper understanding of standards is required to avoid mutual interference and interference problems and to properly manage radio waves. The outline and types of standards will also be explained in detail. Furthermore, instead of a “cut and try” approach when it comes to EMC countermeasures, this lecture will explain how to identify problems and solve them efficiently.

Trends in Recycling of Automotive Plastics and Batteries

Japan already has product-specific recycling laws, and in the automotive sector, appropriate recycling and processing is already underway in accordance with the Automotive Recycling Law. On the other hand, the structure and materials of automobiles themselves are changing in response to the carbon neutrality and marine waste plastic issues, and it is necessary to change our approach to recycling end-of-life products in order to transform the formation of a recycling-oriented society. In addition, some other countries are already strengthening their efforts to address these environmental issues from the perspective of strengthening their own industrial competitiveness and fostering new industries. In addition to these trends in other countries and our own policies, we will explain our efforts to recycle waste plastics and batteries toward the formation of a recycling-oriented society.

Creating a Circular Economy Market for EV Batteries

Batteries used in EVs (EV batteries) have high value for reuse and recycling, and are expected to realize a circular economy. However, there are many issues involved in EV battery circulation, and as a result, the majority of used EVs are being shipped overseas, so a circular economy market has not yet been established in Japan. Therefore, we have forecasted the potential size of the EV battery circular economy market in order to understand the economic impact of circulating EV batteries domestically.
We will explain the contents of our forecast to a wide range of industries, including businesses interested in the secondary use of EV batteries, and propose a methodology for forming a market from the user’s point of view.
