xEV Battery Strategies of the World’s Major Finished Car Manufacturers
Major automobile manufacturers (OEMs) are increasingly revising their BEV production and sales targets due to the slowdown in global BEV growth, which is making it difficult to achieve their initial BEV production and sales targets.
VW Gr., GM, and Ford, which had indicated a shift to BEVs early on, have revised their BEV plans, and have also revised or withdrawn their BEV sales targets for 2026 and beyond. In response to these developments, an increasing number of OEMs are reviewing their strategies, dividing them into “short-term” and “medium- to long-term” timelines. In particular, with regard to BEVs, OEMs are adjusting their overall plans, including costs and supply chain, around 2030 in their mid- to long-term plans, and are clearly promoting a short-term approach that includes engines.
The slowdown in BEVs is also impacting the xEV battery internal/external manufacturing strategies that OEMs have been pursuing. 2020-2022 will see the emergence of numerous partnerships in the global automotive industry, including JVs between OEMs and battery manufacturers. Stricter regulations, such as the US IRA and the European CBAM and Battery Passport, have also encouraged these OEMs and battery manufacturers to collaborate. However, since mid-2023, there has been a decline in such activity, and there has been a trend toward reassessing plans underway.
Some battery manufacturers are also delaying or revising their battery mass production plans, forcing OEMs and battery manufacturers to rethink their businesses. The “future is uncertain” situation is expected to continue for some time to come.
As a result, OEMs and battery manufacturers are searching for realistic business directions and are being asked to reorganize their key strategies, such as building a structure that will ensure profitability and sustainable electrification.
In addition to summarizing global government policies and the growth strategies and future prospects of auto manufacturers and suppliers (cells, components, etc.), we will also examine and analyze the global balance of power, investment, alliances, and other areas surrounding the battery industry. In addition, we will also research and analyze the global balance of power, investment, and alliances surrounding the battery industry.
In particular, we focus on the BEV market and the resulting changes in OEMs’ electrification and battery strategies, as well as the supply-demand situation for materials and cost fluctuations.
